Privacy-first, by design. hypatia is built so that your study data stays on your iPhone or iPad. We do not run servers that collect your conversations, we do not use analytics or tracking, and we never sell your data. This policy explains what the app handles and how.

1. Who we are

hypatia (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is an iOS study companion. This Privacy Policy applies to the hypatia application distributed on the Apple App Store. If you have any question, you can reach us through our support page.

2. Data stored on your device

The following is created and stored locally on your device, in the app’s private storage. It is never uploaded to a server operated by us:

This data remains under your control. Deleting the app removes this locally stored data from your device.

3. Credentials & secure storage

If you connect a remote AI provider, the API key you enter is stored in the iOS Keychain, the system’s encrypted credential store. It is not exposed in plain text and is not transmitted to us.

4. AI processing & third-party providers

hypatia does not include its own AI model server. To generate answers, you choose how the AI runs:

On-device AI (no data leaves your device)

Remote AI providers (data is sent to a third party)

If you configure a remote, OpenAI-compatible provider (for example OpenRouter or Groq, or any endpoint you enter), then the content needed to answer your request — the relevant message text, and any image or document content you attach — is sent directly from your device to that provider over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, so it can generate a reply.

That data is handled under your chosen provider’s own privacy policy and terms, not ours. We recommend reviewing the policy of the provider you select. We do not receive a copy of this traffic.

If you only use on-device options, no conversation content is sent to any external service.

5. Camera, photos & text recognition (OCR)

You may attach an image of an exercise from your camera, photo library or clipboard, and you may run text recognition on a copied image. Text recognition uses Apple’s on-device Vision framework and does not send your images to us.

If you then send that image or extracted text to a remote AI provider (see section 4), it is transmitted to that provider to produce a reply. Camera and photo access is requested only when you use these features, and is governed by the standard iOS permission prompts.

6. Analytics & tracking

hypatia contains no analytics SDKs, no advertising, and no tracking. We do not build a profile of you, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.

7. Contacting support

If you contact us through the form linked on our support page, the information you choose to provide (such as your email address and your message) is processed by Google Forms so we can read and reply to your request, under Google’s privacy policy. Please share only what is necessary to help you.

8. Children’s privacy

hypatia is a study tool that may be used by students, including minors. The app does not require an account and does not collect personal information on our servers. Conversations and lessons stay on the device as described above.

Because remote AI providers process the text you send them, we recommend that younger students use the app with a parent, guardian or teacher, and that families prefer the on-device AI options when they wish to keep all content on the device. Please avoid entering sensitive personal information into the chat.

9. Your choices & control

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the app evolves. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
